ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Led by three players in double figures, the Ohio Dominican men's basketball team picked up their first win of the season after defeating McKendree by the score of 85-77 in the second game of the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament Sunday afternoon.
The setback drops the Bearcats to 0-2 on the year, while the Panthers even their record at 1-1 on the season. The win also marks just the second time the Panthers have scored 80-plus points in last two years.
The Panthers dominated the first half as they scored the first six points of the game and never looked back as they led the Bearcats by 16 going into the locker room. The hot-shooting Panthers dominated the first half statistics, by hammering down 45.7 from the field and 75.0 from the line.
ODU extended their lead to ten at the seven minute mark of the second frame, but four quick points by the Bearcats cut the lead to four (65-61) with 5:36 minutes left to play. Following a time-out, a basket by senior Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) stemmed the tide, and put a halt to the threat.
The Panther offense then showed poise and strong leadership as they held onto the lead and topped the Bearcats 85-77.
The Black and Gold were led by a trio of players scoring in double digits with Jones scoring 23 points while dishing out eight assists. Teammate sophomore Bobby Stauffer (Lexington, Ky.) contributed 19 points and five rebounds, while freshman Mark Minch (West Chester, Ohio) tallied 16 points, five boards and four steals.
Defensively, ODU held McKendree to 28-of-62 (45.2 percent) on field goals, while allowing nine free throws and 14 offensive rebounds. The Panthers shot 53.1 percent on 34-of-64 shooting from the field while grabbing 23 boards and snatching 11 steals.
The Panthers return to the hardwood at 3 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 17, as ODU welcomes Ohio Valley to Alumni Hall for its home opener.
