Strong Finish Lifts Panthers Past Gray Wolves

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A 13-0 second half run propelled Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team to a 57-51 win over Lourdes in the home opener for the Panthers Friday night in the Red Roof Inn Roundball Classic Alumni Hall.

ODU moved to 2-1 on the year, while the Gray Wolves fell to 3-4.

Trailing 44-40 with 5:52 left, the Panthers rattled off 13 straight. Junior Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) and senior Aaron Gibbs (Oberlin, Ohio) hit free throws to knot the game, and senior Jake Mochoskay (Mansfield, Ohio) knocked down a triple from the right wing off a nifty feed from freshman Bobby Stauffer (Lexington, Ky.) to put the Panthers in front 47-44 with 3:44 left.

Gibbs then made a layup to push the lead to five, and gave ODU its biggest lead with two more freebies, then knocked down two more to make it 53-44 with 1:56 left.

The senior forward then made four more free throws in the final minute and a half to cap off ODU's scoring and seal the win for the Panthers.

Gibbs, who finished 10-of-11 from the charity stripe, had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Mochoskay scored 11 of his 14 points after intermission to also lead the Panthers. Jones had seven points and matched a career-high with seven rebounds, senior Kip Kelley (Raleigh, N.C.) buried a pair of threes and senior Zak Kapron (Malvern, Ohio) pulled down seven boards to lead ODU.

The contest featured nine ties and nine lead changes, with neither side leading by more than six until the game's waning moments. ODU limited Lourdes to 32.7 percent shooting and was plus-seven on the glass (36-29), but turned the ball over 19 points and were outscored 24-14 in the paint.

Senior Darrien Douglas (Willard, Ohio) hit a three that put the Panthers on top 16-13 midway through the first half, but the Panthers managed just five points in the rest of the frame as Lourdes came back to forge a tie at the break, 21-21.

The Panthers conclude play at the Red Roof Inn Roundball Classic at 3 p.m. Saturday as ODU takes on Central State, who defeated Ashland 81-69 in the first game of the classic earlier this evening. Lourdes will play Ashland at 1 p.m. in the first contest.
