COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team couldn't protect an eight-point lead with seven minutes left, allowing Urbana to close the game on a 21-7 run as the Panthers fell 76-70 Wednesday night in non-conference action in Alumni Hall.
With the setback, ODU dropped to 5-18, while the Blue Knights moved to 7-17.
Aaron Gibbs (Oberlin, Ohio) had his fifth double-double of the year with 20 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 8-of-13 from the field. Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) scored 14 on 6-of-9 shooting and Jake Mochoskay (Mansfield, Ohio) tallied 12 points to lead the Panthers.
Leading by three at the break, ODU came out and quickly pushed the lead to nine at 37-28, with Gibbs, Jones and Darrien Douglas (Willard, Ohio) each scoring on ODU's first three possessions. Jones tossed an alley-oop lob to John Trew (Barberton, Ohio), who flushed the two-handed slam home, then had a layup to help the Panthers push their lead to 43-31 with 16:42 to play, their biggest advantage of the game.
Still up by 10, 50-40, the Panthers went through a dry spell, allowing the Blue Knights to rattle off 10 straight points as ODU turned the ball over on five of its next six possessions. The Panthers, though, seemingly regained control with a 13-5 spurt, capped off by a long rebound from Gibbs, who brought the ball up the floor himself and dished to Mochoskay for an easy layup to make it 63-55 at the seven minute mark.
But Urbana recovered to score 14 of the next 17 points, with ODU's only bucket coming on a three-pointer by Kip Kelley (Raleigh, N.C.). That gave the Blue Knights a 69-66 lead with 2:54 to go. Jones missed a jumper on the next possession, but Trew followed with a putback dunk to make it 69-68 with 1:56 left.
The Blue Knights made one of two free throws on their next possession, but the Panthers turned it over on their next possession and Urbana hit two more free throws to make it 72-68 with 28 ticks left. Gibbs answered with a layup with 20 seconds to go. Urbana hit two more free throws, the Panthers missed a pair of threes and the Blue Knights sank two more free throws to close the game.
The Panthers shot 46.4 percent for the game, compared to 43.1 percent for the Blue Knights, and had a 35-29 edge in rebounding. But Urbana had 14 steals on ODU's 21 turnovers, which led to 23 points, and the Blue Knights went 11-of-20 from three-point range and 21-of-24 from the free throw line.
ODU will return to conference play at 1 p.m. Saturday as the Panthers take on GLIAC South Division foe Tiffin in Alumni Hall.
