ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team couldn't overcome a sluggish first half, losing 80-53 Thursday night at No. 16 Grand Valley State in its first GLIAC contest in program history.
The Panthers (2-4, 0-1 GLIAC) trailed 45-20 at half, though were only outscored 35-33 after intermission. Morgan Jones had 13 points, Aaron Gibbs had 11 and Darrien Douglas chipped in with 10 off the bench.
Down 7-6 early in the first half, ODU's offense slumped as the Panthers managed just four points over a 10 minute span. Grand Valley (4-1, 1-0) outscored the Panthers 28-4 in that stretch to take a 35-10 lead with 5:13 left. Jones' three ended the run, but the Lakers still took the 25 point lead into the half.
The Panthers committed 13 first half turnovers, which resulted in 19 Laker points,and Grand Valley also had a 11-0 edge in second chance points in the frame.
The Lakers lead grew to as many as 39 points in the second half before the Panthers responded to close the game on a 19-7 run.
Grand Valley shot 54 percent (27-of-50) for the contest, compared to 37 percent (17-of-46) for ODU. The Lakers also had a decisive 34-16 advantage in points in the paint.
