Panthers Turned Over by Falcons, 81-55

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio  -- Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team stood toe-to-toe with Division I Bowling Green for the first half, but 23 turnovers and sharp shooting from the Falcons helped prevent the upset as the Panthers fell 81-55 Monday night in Bowling Green's Anderson Arena.

The setback dropped ODU to 0-2 on the season as the Panthers were seeking their first all-time win against a Division I opponent (0-9). Bowling Green improved to 1-1 on the season in taking the first meeting between the two schools.

Ohio Dominican trailed just 41-36 early in the second half, but Bowling Green scored the next 10 points as part of a commanding 29-2 run to take a 70-38 lead and seize control.

Much like in the opening loss to Southern Indiana, a slow start hurt ODU as the Panthers missed four of their first five shots of the game and committed four turnovers in falling behind 10-2 five minutes into the contest.

The Panthers responded with a 10-3 run, though, sparked by the bench as junior Zak Kapron (Malvern, Ohio) had five points and classmate John Trew (Barberton, Ohio; pictured) poured in a jumper to trim the score to 13-12 at the 12:21 mark.

Kapron's second three-point play of the half evened the score at 17 with 9:21 to play, and moments later, Kip Kelley (Raleigh, N.C.) drilled a three in transition from the left wing to give ODU its first lead of the 2010-11 season at 20-19. Sophomore Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) followed by knocking in another triple to make it 23-19.

Ohio Dominican maintained the lead at 28-25, but Bowling Green answered with a 16-3 run to close the first half as turnovers continued to plague the Panther offense. ODU went into intermission trailing 41-31 despite shooting 54.5 percent (12-of-22), as the Panthers had 13 turnovers, which resulted in 18 BG points.

The Panthers scored the first five points of the second half on a three-ball by Trew and a jumper from the foul line by Jones to make it 41-36, but that would be as close as ODU would get as the aforementioned Falcon surge ended ODU's chances.

For the contest, Ohio Dominican shot 40.4 percent (21-of-52), compared to 44.3 percent (31-of-70) for Bowling Green. The Falcons scored 30 points off the 23 ODU turnovers, had a 14-6 edge in second chance points and a 16-1 advantage in steals.

Trew led Ohio Dominican with 13 points, hitting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and grabbing six rebounds with three blocks. Kapron contributed 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Jones had eight points and a career-best seven boards.

The Panthers will play host to the Red Roof Inn Basketball Tournament this weekend as Ohio Dominican welcomes in Cincinnati Christian University, Lourdes College and Mid-Continent University. Lourdes and Mid-Continent will square off at 6 p.m. Friday in Alumni Hall, followed at 8 p.m. by ODU-Cincinnati Christian. The consolation game will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday, while a tip time of 3 p.m. is scheduled for the championship game.
