COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior John Trew (Barberton, Ohio) hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 1:21 left and Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team rallied from an 11-point second half deficit to record a 65-62 victory over Mid-Continent University in the championship game of the Red Roof Inn Roundball Classic on Saturday in Alumni Hall.
Trew's triple was part of a 13-0 burst by the Panthers over the game's final 4:49. Down 59-52, junior Zak Kapron (Malvern, Ohio) hit two free throws, and sophomore Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) swiped a rebound away from MCU's Tim Bryant and laid it in to bring ODU (2-2) to within 59-56 with 3:25 left.
After three missed shots, junior Aaron Gibbs (Oberlin, Ohio) took a pass in the post and spun right for an open layup to make it a one-point game. Then, after Kapron stole an inbounds pass, Trew buried a three-pointer from the left wing to give Ohio Dominican its first lead of the second half at 61-59 with 1:21 to play.
The Panther defense forced another Cougar miss, and Kapron missed a short jumper, but Gibbs was there for the tip-in to extend ODU's lead to 63-59 with 40 seconds to play. Mid-Continent missed two more shots, and Jones picked up the rebound and hit two free throws to seal the win.
The Cougars (4-5) had used a 15-0 run to close the first half and begin the second to lead 40-31 three minutes into the second half. The lead grew to 49-38 after a Chris Ferguson layup with 12:52 left, and the Cougars fended off some mini-runs by ODU to keep its advantage until Trew's three-pointer.
A tightly contested first half featured five ties and nine lead changes. With the score even at 23, the Panthers briefly jumped in front with six straight points. Trew had a pair of offensive rebounds and putbacks, and freshman Don Kellum (Chicago) made a layup to make it 29-23 at the 6:30 mark. A pair of Jake Mochoskay (Mansfield, Ohio) free throws made it 31-25, but ODU was held scoreless over the final 4:29, turning it over four times and missing its final five shots as the Cougars took a 32-31 lead into half.
Gibbs led ODU with 13 points and also had seven rebounds to go along with three assists. Trew came off the bench for 11 points and seven boards, and Kapron had 10 points and seven rebounds in his first start of the year.
Ohio Dominican won despite shooting a season-low 36.4 percent (24-of-66), and the Panthers hit just 6-of-23 from beyond the arc (26.1 percent). Still, the Panthers grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and scored 24 second chance points and had just four second half turnovers after committing nine in the first 20 minutes.
Gibbs was named the tournament MVP and Trew was named to the all-tournament team as well.
The Panthers hit the road for a 7:30 p.m. meeting against Northwestern Ohio on Tuesday.
