Panthers Fall Short in A.I.I. Championship, 65-60

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team fell just short of grabbing their first NAIA National Tournament berth since the 2001-2002 on Sunday, losing 65-60 to Johnson and Wales University in the A.I.I. Championship game in Denver, Colorado. The Panthers captured a spot in the championship game after defeating Walla Walla University 86-75 on Saturday evening.

ODU gave host JWU all they could handle in the final as the Panther defense held the Wildcats to 0-for-12 shooting from three point range. The Panthers entered the break only down 31-30, but could not overcome the fifty percent shooting (22-for-44) and 21 made free throws by the Wildcats as they fell 65-60. With the setback, ODU finishes the season with a 10-17 record.

Aaron Gibbs (So./Oberlin, OH) paced the Panthers with 16 points, while senior Adriene Rodriguez (Lorain, OH) concluded his career in the Black and Gold with 13 points.

ODU cruised in their semifinal game against the Wolves of Walla Walla University on Saturday shooting 33-for-57 (57.9%) from the field and 8-for-19 (42.1%) behind the arc, en route to the 86-75 victory. Gibbs led four Panthers in double figures scoring 24 points on 11-for-13 shooting. John Trew (So./Barberton, OH) finished with 16 points, going 4-for-5 from three point territory. Rodriguez and Zak Kapron (So./Malvern, OH) each chipped in with 10.
