COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team could not capture the win in their final home game of the season on Saturday, falling to future GLIAC rival Lake Erie College 78-64 in Alumni Hall.
The Panthers opened the game on a high after celebrating their annual Senior Day and traded baskets with Lake Erie from the opening tip, but quickly fell behind mid-way through the first half. The Storm (11-15) took control of the game and stretched their lead to fifteen at the 5:37 mark of the opening stanza. ODU turned up the dial offensively and countered with 18-10 run to enter the half down, 43-36.
The Panthers (8-16) scored the first four points in the second half to trim the deficit to three, but the Storm clamped down defensively to go on a 20-6 run and take a 63-46 lead with just over eight minutes to play. Lake Erie kept the ODU attack off-balanced the rest of the way as the Panthers were unable to cut the deficit to single digits.
The Panthers cut the lead to 12 with just over two minutes to go thanks in part to seniors Sonny Stattmiller (Columbus, OH) Jim McCurdy (Columbus, OH; pictured) and Adriene Rodriguez (Lorain, OH). The trio led the way for ODU with Stattmiller scoring a team high 13 points, McCurdy finishing with 12 and Rodriguez dropping in 11. Fellow seniors Terence Burse (Detroit, MI) added six points and David May (Magnolia, OH) scored the Panthers final bucket of the game.
The Storm were led by Ethan Bradshaw with a game-high 17 points and Garrick Sims chipped in with 15 in the win.
ODU will wrap up their regular season on Monday, February 22nd when they travel to Urbana, Ohio for a make-up doubleheader with the Urbana Blue Knights. The Panther women will take on the Blue Knights at 6 p.m. with the men doing battle at 8 p.m.
