Panthers Fall Short in Championship Game

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team traveled to Mount Vernon, Ohio for the A+ Autobrokers Holiday Invitational this past weekend. The Panthers advanced to the Championship Game after posting an impressive 94-84 win over Concordia University (MI) on Friday. ODU squared off against Mid-Continent (KY) on Saturday, but were able to run their win streak to five games as they fell 62-44.

The Cougars came out clicking on offense shooting 13-for-21 (61.9 percent) from the field in the first half. Their defense was also in full force, holding the Panthers to a season low 17 points. Despite struggling offensively, ODU found themselves only down ten, 27-17, heading into halftime.

Mid-Continent continued their remarkable shooting in the second half going 12-for-24 and finishing with an impressive 55.6 percent from the floor. The Panthers were able to hang with the Cougars in the second, but could not overcome the ten point halftime deficit and finished with a season low 44 points.

Tournament MVP Kenny Thomas paced the Cougars with a game-high 14 points and Donovan Willis chipped in with 12.

The Panthers were led by Dominic Russo (So./Sagamore Hills, OH) with 10 points. Adriene Rodriguez (Sr./Lorian, OH; pictured) and John Trew (So./Barberton, OH) both finished with eight.

Rodriguez and Russo were selected to the All-Tournament Team after dropping 16 and 13 points, respectively, in the Panthers first game. Joining them from Mid-Continent were Willis and Aaron Pearson. Brandon Short of Mount Vernon and Marius Williams of Concordia rounded out the team after Mount Vernon defeated Concordia in the consolation game, 83-75.

Ohio Dominican will return to action this weekend as they head to Holland , Michigan for the Holland Sentinel Community Tournament hosted by Hope College. ODU will open the tournament versus Marygrove College at 6 p.m.
