Panthers Net Five William Jewell Turnovers in 31-21 Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In a step away from the normal Great Midwest schedule, the Ohio Dominican Panthers football team welcomed the William Jewell Cardinals to Panther Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 17) afternoon. 

The Panthers grabbed five turnovers, including four interceptions in an 31-21 win over the Cardinals to improve to 2-1 on the year. 

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Jake Byrd (Fort Wayne, Indiana) threw for 187 yards in the air with three touchdowns while completing 22-of-32 passes. Byrd also accounted for one rushing touchdown as well. 
  • W.R. Sanders (Gary, Indiana) rushed for 75 yards in the game as he ran for 68 yards in the second half on nine carries. 
  • Austin Davis (Wooster, Ohio) caught a team-high ten passes for 78 yards. Andrew Wolf (Ashland, Ohio) had five catches for 26 yards and one touchdown of his own. Ty Wiley (Pickerington, Ohio) tallied four catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns. Wiley had 46 yards after catch in the game. 
  • Issac Roop (Ashland, Ohio) made his Panthers debut at punter and was stellar with the foot. He averaged 44.9 yards per punt, along with a school record 76-yard punt in the third quarter. 
  • Kaiden Koch (Grafton, Ohio) was perfect from the field in kicking as he nailed all four extra points and a 27-yard field goal. 
  • Michael Powers (West Mansfield, Ohio) made ten stops with five solo and assisted tackles.
  • Daishaun Hill (Rocky River, Ohio), Darryl Sinclair (Solon, Ohio), Dante Abrams (Maple Heights, Ohio) and Dimitri Mitsopoulos (Toledo, Ohio) all made interceptions as ODU took away four passes. 
  • Jaylin Garner (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and Eddie Miller-Garrett (Newark, NJ) each had 1.5 tackles for loss as Miller-Garrett had 1.5 sacks total. Garner made eight tackles and assisted on half a sack. 
  • Powers, Qwyn Williams (Gahanna, Ohio) and Ce'Ayre Hall (Cincinnati, Ohio) all had a sack each as Ohio Dominican totaled five sacks in the game. 
  • Ohio Dominican outrushed the Cardinals 128-63 as the Cardinals won the total offense category 338-315. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After Dante Abrams ended William Jewell's first drive with a interception off of a WR pass, Darryl Sinclair followed on the next drive with a pick of his own for the Panthers. 
  • Ty Wiley took a slant route for a 35-yard touchdown pass as Ohio Dominican took a 7-0 lead with 3:09 left. 
  • Dimitri Mitsopoulos got an interception on WJC's third drive. Jake Byrd took the next play to the right side for an 18-yard touchdown run, putting ODU up 14-0 with 2:16 left in the first quarter. 
  • Later in the second quarter, Byrd connected with Andrew Wolf for his 42nd career touchdown catch from four yards away as the lead grew to 21-0 in the final 1:17 of the half. 
  • William Jewell answered with a third quarter touchdown before Byrd found Wiley for an 11-yard touchdown, pushing the lead to 28-7. 
  • Kaiden Koch started the fourth quarter with a 27-yard field goal before William Jewell ended the game with two straight touchdowns. 

RECORD UPDATE

  • Issac Roop broke the previous school record for a single-game punt of 73 yards with a 76-yard punt in the third quarter. 
  • With half of a sack, Jaylin Garner is now tied with Di'Andre Harrison for career sacks (22.5). 
    • Garner is also second in program history for tackles for loss (37.0), behind Sydney Omameh (38.0)

UP NEXT

  • Ohio Dominican hosts the #19 Indianapolis Greyhounds next Saturday (Sept. 24) in the second part of the GLVC/G-MAC scheduling alliance. Kickoff from Panther Stadium is at 1:00 PM.
