Football Rallies, Knocks Off Regionally Ranked Wayne State

The football team's penultimate GLIAC contest was one to remember, as the Panthers played host to Wayne State for the first time since 2011. The Warriors entered the Nov. 5 showdown with a 7-2 record and were seeking a postseason bid, sitting at No. 10 in the region and No. 28 in the nation.

ODU trailed 10-6 at the half, managing just 117 yards, but the offense came to life in the third quarter. Joe Hines had a 35 yard run, leading to an 18 yard touchdown from David Turner on a shovel pass. The Panthers converted their two-point try to go on top 14-10.

Wayne State countered with a touchdown to go back in front 17-14, but ODU struck back quickly. Hines took a handoff around the right side and outran the defense down the Panther sideline for a 56 yard touchdown, putting ODU on top 21-17 with 5:32 left in the third.

ODU's defense took over from there, limiting Wayne State to just three first downs for the rest of the game, and a Grant Russell touchdown pass with 5:01 left in the fourth sealed the win.

Ross Thompson made 17 tackles (4.0 TFL) and would be named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Marquise Tyus made 10 tackles and Tre McIntyre had seven tackles and an interception to also lead the defense.

Hines had a career day, rushing for 141 yards on just 16 carries, and Russell threw for three scores while completing 22-of-30 passes.
