VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Ohio Dominican senior defensive back Billy Eakins (Pickerington, Ohio) was named the Defensive MVP at the 2017 Dream Bowl, an all-star game featuring FCS, Division II and Division III players.
Eakins, who returned an interception for a touchdown during the game, finished his career with 255 tackles, which is the fourth-most in ODU history, and his 14 career interceptions are a school record. He's also the school record setter in passes defended with 43. Eakins played 48 games in his career, making 46 starts.
In 2016, Eakins picked up First Team All-GLIAC and D2CCA Second Team All-Super Region Four honors. A nominee for the Cliff Harris Award as the best Division II defensive player in the country, Eakins tallied 58 tackles (35 solo) and three interceptions while also breaking up three other passes. He made 10 tackles and picked off two passes at Findlay and also had eight tackles in wins over Saginaw Valley and Walsh.
A Sporting News Preseason All-American in 2015, Eakins also picked up First Team All-GLIAC and a trio of all-region awards in 2014. He was also a Second Team All-GLIAC selection in 2013 and earned a pair of GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors in his career.
