FLORENCE, Ala. – Junior quarterback Grant Russell (Newark, Ohio) was one of 11 players from Super Region 4 nominated for the Harlon Hill Trophy as the best player in Division II football.
A total of 42 players across the nation's four regions were nominated for the award. Voting will be conducted at the regional level, and the top two players from each region will advance to the national ballot when regional voting concludes on Monday, Nov. 28.
Russell had a superlative season, completing 241-of-345 throws (69.9 percent) for 2,730 yards and 23 touchdowns. That was the best completion percentage in school history and ranked second in Division II entering the postseason.
An All-GLIAC selection, Russell completed at least 64 percent of his throws in each of the last seven games and had a trio of 300-plus yard performances in that stretch as well. He earned GLIAC Player of the Week honors after completing 31-of-35 passes for 384 yards and four TDs at Northern Michigan and followed that with a 30-of-35 performance for 371 yards and four more touchdowns at Walsh.
He added 331 rushing yards and three touchdowns to those passing numbers on the season as well.
For his career, Russell has completed 66.8 percent of his passes (479-of-717) for 5,547 yards and 43 touchdowns. He has appeared in 30 games, making 22 starts, and has also rushed for 594 yards and eight touchdowns.
