Late Homers Doom Baseball At Lake Erie

EASTLAKE, Ohio – Lake Erie hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning of game one and in the sixth inning of game two as Ohio Dominican's baseball team suffered defeats of 4-3 and 6-4 Saturday afternoon in G-MAC play.

The opener was tied at 3-3 before a solo homer gave Lake Erie the lead in the bottom of the eighth. The Panthers then went down in order in the ninth.

Freshman Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio) had an RBI single in the second and junior Joey Machuga (Canfield, Ohio) homered to left-center in the third to give ODU a 2-0 lead.

The Storm countered with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the third and took the lead on an ODU error in the fifth before Machuga's RBI single knotted it up at 3-3 in the top of the eighth.

Senior Mitchell Bault (Mason, Ohio) took the loss, logging 8.0 innings and striking out five while walking one.

Staab and Machuga each had two hits for the Panthers in the opener.

The Panthers then jumped to a 4-0 lead in game two, including a two-run homer in the second by senior Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio).

ODU's bats fell silent after that, though, managing just three hits the rest of the game, though the Panthers maintained a 4-3 lead into the sixth before Lake Erie's three-run homer with two outs put the Storm in front for good.

Junior Logan Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio) allowed three runs in 5.0 innings and Kaucher had two hits for the Panthers.
