Late Rallies Fall Short As Baseball Drops Two To AB

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's baseball team had chances late in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader against Alderson Broaddus but ultimately fell by scores of 16-11 and 3-2 in G-MAC play from Panther Valley.

In the opener, the Panthers had trailed 12-2 in the bottom of the sixth, but scored six unanswered runs, including a five-run seventh, to close the gap. Trailing 12-8, ODU had two runners in scoring position, but a liner to left was caught to end the threat.

AB then answered with four runs in the top of the eighth to pull back in front before ODU drew three straight bases loaded walks in the bottom half to make it 16-11, but could not push across any more runs.

Seniors Noah Bland (Oberlin, Ohio) and Genesis Hillard (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior Joey Machuga (Canfield, Ohio) each had two hits for the Panthers, with freshman Manny Vorhees (Wapakoneta, Ohio) homering in the first and Hillard homering in the second to give ODU an early 2-0 lead.

The Battlers scored four times in the third and six times in the fourth, though, to take control of the game.

In game two, ODU fell behind early on a three-run homer in the first, but freshman Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio) singled through the left side in the second inning to score Machuga and narrow the gap to 3-1.

The score remained that way until the sixth when sophomore Tim Zeller (Mount Vernon, Ohio) homered to left field to make it 3-2. The Panthers would leave a runner on that inning, though, and hit into a double play with two on in the seventh to end the game.

Senior Garret Sendelbach (Tiffin, Ohio) held the Battlers to just five hits and fanned five in a complete game effort but took the loss.

Ohio Dominican and AB close their series with a doubleheader on Sunday starting at noon.
