Baseball Holds Off Hillsdale Charge In Ninth, Earns First NCAA Regional Win In Program History

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Junior Joe Filosa (Fort Wayne, Ind.) threw 6.2 scoreless innings and Ohio Dominican's baseball team fended off a ninth inning Hillsdale rally to defeat the Chargers 4-3 on Friday in the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament at Robin Roberts Stadium.

The Panthers improved to 33-16 and advance to play in another elimination game at 3 p.m. CT (4 p.m. ET) Saturday against the loser of tonight's Southern Indiana-Ashland contest. Hillsdale saw its season 26-30.

Filosa scattered five hits while striking out four in helping the Panthers win their first NCAA Tournament game in program history. He improved to 5-1 on the spring and lowered his ERA to 3.88. He threw 64 of his 105 pitches in the zone.

Leading 2-0 going to the ninth, junior Chris Sackett (Loveland, Ohio) reached on an error and was lifted for pinch-runner Genesis Hillard (Cincinnati, Ohio). Senior Max Banke (Oakwood, Ohio) singled and junior Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) laid down a perfect sac bunt to move both into scoring position.

The bunt paid off as Hillard raced home on a wild pitch, and Banke scored on a basehit by junior Brad Hull (Gahanna, Ohio) to make it 4-0.

The Chargers struck back for three runs in the bottom half of the inning, though, and had the tying run in scoring position and winning run at first with two outs, but junior Brad Wilson (Alexandria, Ohio) forced a pop out to shallow right to end it.

ODU was outhit 10-6 in the game, but took advantage of three Hillsdale errors and in recording the win.

Filosa induced a double play grounder in the first inning, and stranded runners in the second and third innings as well. The Chargers hit a one-out double in the fourth inning, but he fanned the last two hitters to keep Hillsdale off the board.

Hillsdale then put two on with two out in the fifth frame, but a fielder's choice grounder to Hull at short ended that frame.

Junior Noah Bland (Oberlin, Ohio) started the sixth inning with a double to right-center, went to third on an error, then came in to score as Sackett fought off a 1-2 pitch into shallow right for a basehit.

Komminsk ran down a liner to the wall in right to start the seventh inning, but the Chargers managed to put two on with two outs. Wilson entered and finished the inning with a strikeout on a 3-2 pitch.

Bland drew a walk to start the eighth and went to second on a wild pitch. With one out, a grounder was hit to third, and Bland broke for third after the throw. The Chargers tried to throw him out at third, but the throw sailed high and went towards the bleachers, and Bland scored on a headfirst dive to put ODU on top 2-0.

Bland finished 2-for-3 at the dish and also walked, scoring ODU's first two runs of the game.

Wilson picked up the save, his ninth of the spring, working the final 2.1 innings and striking out three.
