Baseball Drops NCAA Tournament Opener To Quincy

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A rally in the middle innings wasn't enough as Ohio Dominican's baseball team opened the NCAA Midwest Regional with an 8-3 setback to Quincy on Thursday at Robin Roberts Stadium.

The No. 4 seed Panthers fell to 32-16 and will play the loser of this afternoon's Illinois Springfield-Hillsdale matchup at 10 a.m. CT (11 a.m. ET) in an elimination game on Friday.

Quincy (40-16) scored twice in the top of the first, and the Panthers threatened in the bottom half, drawing three walks, but a double play and another ground out ended the frame.

ODU turned a double play of its own in the second inning, but sophomore Bernee Sanchez (Grove City, Ohio) was robbed of a hit on a diving play down the third base line in the bottom of the frame.

The Hawks challenged in the fourth inning, hitting a double with a runner on, but ODU was able to cut the run down at the plate on a relay from Sanchez in right to senior second baseman Max Banke (Oakwood, Ohio) to junior catcher Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio).

Junior Garret Sendelbach (Tiffin, Ohio) then picked up a pair of punch outs in the fifth inning, with the latter drawing interference on Kaucher's attempt to throw out a runner stealing second, to end that frame and keep the score 2-0.

Quincy struck for three runs in the sixth, but ODU answered right back with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning. With runners on first and third, Kaucher hit an RBI grounder, and junior Chris Sackett (Loveland, Ohio) followed later with a long at bat that resulted in a solid two-run single back up the middle.

That cut the deficit to 5-3, but the Hawks hit a two-run homer to answer in their half of the seventh, then tacked on another homer in the ninth to cap the scoring.

The Panthers drew six walks in the game, but managed just four hits in the setback as ODU also hit into four double plays.
