COLUMBUS, Ohio – A four-run rally in the eighth inning of game one lifted Ohio Dominican's baseball team to a 5-4 win, and the Panthers would complete the doubleheader sweep of Hillsdale with a 3-0 win in game two Sunday in Panther Valley.
ODU, ranked No. 15 in the country, moved back into first place in the G-MAC as the Panthers improved to 27-10 (14-5 G-MAC). Hillsdale is now in second place at 18-22 (15-6 G-MAC).
Hillsdale broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth in the opener with a two-out RBI double, but the Panthers struck back in the bottom half. Senior Max Banke (Oakwood, Ohio) started the inning with a basehit to right, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a fielding error to tie the game.
Senior Cody Paterniti (Chardon, Ohio), who had reached on the error, advanced to third on another Charger error, then won a foot race to home plate on a passed ball to score the go-ahead run.
Hillsdale threatened in the ninth inning, scoring two runs on a basehit with two outs, but junior Brad Wilson (Alexandria, Ohio) shut the door by inducing a groundout to first base to end the game.
The Panthers finished with 11 hits and drew four walks in the game, but couldn't break free in the early stages of the game as ODU ultimately left 11 runners on base.
Junior Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk, while sophomore Joey Machuga (Canfield, Ohio) finished 2-for-4. Banke and junior Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) also tallied two hits for the Panthers.
Junior Joe Filosa (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had a quality start but did not earn a decision. He worked six-plus innings, surrendering eight hits but just one run as he struck out five.
The Panthers also turned three double plays in the contest.
In game two, which did not count towards the conference standings, junior Garret Sendelbach (Tiffin, Ohio) tossed his first career complete game shutout. He allowed just two hits and punched out seven in improving to 5-1 on the season.
It's the second straight complete game for the southpaw, who also went the distance last Sunday at Indianapolis in an 11-2 victory.
The Panthers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Kaucher snuck a double down the third base line and scored on Machuga's basehit to right-center. Junior Chris Sackett (Loveland, Ohio) then ripped a basehit to left-center, and Banke legged out a fielder's choice grounder to allow Machuga to score.
ODU tacked on another run in the third inning as Sackett singled with one out, went to third on Komminsk's basehit, then scored on an errant pickoff attempt to first base.
Sendelbach did not allow a hit after the third inning. A nifty 4-6-3 double play ended the fifth, and he worked around a pair of walks in the sixth inning by inducing a grounder to first to end the inning. He then went to his breaking ball in the seventh inning to record a pair of backward K's to end the contest.
Kaucher and Sackett each had two hits to lead the offense. Kaucher has now hit in 19 straight games and reached base in 32 straight games, while Machuga has reached safely in 28 straight contests.
Ohio Dominican will take on Ashland in a non-conference game at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Panther Valley.
