INDIANAPOLIS – For the third time in four weeks, Ohio Dominican's baseball team swept the G-MAC North Division weekly honors, as junior Mitchell Bault (Maineville, Ohio) was named Pitcher of the Week and junior Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio) was named Player of the Week on Monday.
The Panthers have won seven of the eight weekly awards the conference has issued thus far, including all four of the Pitcher of the Week accolades. This is the second time Bault has been honored, and this is the second career honor for Kaucher, who was named a GLIAC Player of the Week last February.
Bault tossed a gem in the second of ODU's three-game series with Wayne State, throwing a nine-inning shutout against the Warriors. He allowed just three hits and struck out a career-high 10 in what was his second career complete game. No Warrior reached scoring position in the game, and he threw 69 of his 105 pitches for strikes.
The right-hander also earned the award on Feb. 19 after defeating Grand Valley 6-1, working 6.0 innings and yielding one run while allowing three and striking out nine. Bault leads the conference with 27 strikeouts and ranks second in ERA (1.23) over his 22.0 innings pitched and has allowed just 12 hits, while opponents are hitting .164 against him this spring.
Kaucher had big games at the plate in both of ODU's wins over Wayne State, including driving in the game-winning run in Sunday's 5-4 win in the eighth inning. He went 3-for-4 in that contest with a walk, a double and two RBIs. In ODU's 11-0 win over Wayne State on Saturday, he finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs, a triple and a walk. Overall, he batted .500 with five RBIs, three walks and three runs in the series.
Kaucher has reached base in nine of ODU's 10 games this spring and is tied for the G-MAC lead with 12 RBIs while ranking fifth in the conference with a .433 batting average.
Additionally, Ohio Dominican's baseball team moved up to No. 3 in the NCBWA Midwest Region Rankings, announced today. The Panthers trail just Indy (87 points) and Southern Indiana (71 points) while racking up 67 points themselves in this week's poll.
ODU has a 7-3 record this season. The Panthers will travel to Florence, S.C. for five games from Saturday, March 10 – Tuesday, March 13, getting started with a 3 p.m. contest against Fairmont State on Saturday.
