Road Swing Continues For Baseball At Walsh On Wednesday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's baseball team continues its 10 game road trip as the Panthers travel to Walsh for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Walsh enters Wednesday's play with a 20-8 record overall and sits third in the GLIAC with a 9-3 conference mark. ODU will come into the doubleheader with a 15-12 record overall and is tied for fifth in the GLIAC with a 6-6 record in league games.

In the first four games of the road swing, ODU split a series with Grand Valley in Allendale as the Panther bats came alive to the tune of 38 runs and 49 hits over the weekend.

Junior Lee Sponseller (Mason, Ohio) hit .529 with three homers and nine RBIs over the weekend to cap off a six-game stretch in which he homered four times and knocked in 14 runs. Sophomores Noah Bland (Oberlin, Ohio) and Genesis Hillard (Cincinnati, Ohio) swung the stick well against GVSU, with Bland hitting .500 with a homer and three steals and Hillard hitting .429 while also drawing five walks.

Senior Kyle Burson (Brunswick, Ohio) hit .389 with four driven in, junior Cody Paterniti (Chardon, Ohio) batted .385 with a homer and four RBIs, and junior Justin Childers (Pickerington, Ohio) batted .353 with four RBIs and three steals.

Sponseller has now hit in nine straight games. He's batting .483 with five homers, 17 RBIs and a .590 on-base percentage in that stretch. Bland has hit in six straight games, while Hillard and senior Tony Evans (Medway, Ohio) have each hit in five straight contests.

The Panthers rank third in the GLIAC in batting average (.316) and on-base percentage (.390) while sitting fourth in slugging (.479). ODU also ranks fourth in the conference in runs scored and home runs and second in triples (10).

Childers ranks third in the GLIAC in runs (31) and fifth in homers (six) and RBIs (29). He has the fourth best slugging percentage (.703) and ranks sixth in batting (.406) and eighth in OBP (.474).

Sophomore Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio) is hitting .392, which is ninth in the GLIAC, and also ranks ninth with a .474 OBP. His 12 doubles are third-most in the conference.

On the mound, sophomores Garret Sendelbach (Tiffin, Ohio) and Brad Wilson (Alexandria, Ohio) earned wins for the Panthers last week. Sendelbach allowed six hits and one unearned run over 5.0 innings in Saturday's 5-1 win, while Wilson struck out eight in 5.2 innings in Sunday's 16-8 win.

Wilson leads the team in victories with a 4-2 record to go along with a 3.24 ERA. He has punched out 29 batters in 33.1 innings. Burson leads the team in ERA at 3.03 with a 3-1 record and has walked just four batters in 29.2 innings of work. Sendelbach sports a 3-1 record as well and has a 4.15 ERA in five starts, leading the team with 34.2 innings pitched.

Overall, Panther pitchers have walked just 78 batters in 212.1 innings on the mound, the third fewest in the league, and ODU's pitchers have surrendered a GLIAC-low 10 home runs as well.

The Cavaliers are second in the league in runs scored (203) while pacing the conference with 31 homers. Walsh is hitting .307 as a team, which is the fifth best mark in the conference. Austin Szink leads the team with a .426 batting average, nine homers and 32 RBIs, while Tyson Lautanen is batting .357 with three homers and 22 RBIs.

Mark Mittiga is leading the pitching the staff with a 3-1 record and a 1.96 ERA in four starts, while Matt Iosue is 5-1 with a 3.08 ERA in seven outings.
