Panthers Conclude Season with Split

ASHLAND, Ohio – After getting roughed up start to the three-game series on Saturday, the Ohio Dominican baseball team bounced back Sunday afternoon to win game one from the Eagles 7-0.  Ashland captured game two 8-2.

The Panthers finished the regular season with an overall record of 23-26 (17-16 GLIAC) while the Eagles moved to 32-16 (20-12).

In game one, a five run fifth inning sparked the panthers, who also banged out 12 hits. Junior Sean Blackburn (Wadsworth, Ohio) collected his third win of the season and now sits at 3-6. He went five complete innings, allowing just four hits while striking out three.

Ohio Dominican took the early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a single by junior Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela). Delgado swiped second and third to put him in scoring position for sophomore Phil Jaskot (Upper Arlington, Ohio). Jaskot hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Delgado.

Sophomore Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio) led off the top of the third with a double and advanced to third on senior Ryan Rovnak's (Poland, Ohio) single. Schluessler scored the Panthers second run of the game on a fly ball to right field from sophomore Kyle Tisdale (Uniontown, Ohio).

Freshman Jacob Horsley (Thornville, Ohio) hit a leadoff single to get things going in the fifth. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Schluessler. With his second hit of the game, Rovnak singled on a bunt and the Panthers had runners at the corners with one out. Tisdale knocked in his second RBI of the game after singling to left field. Up, 3-0, junior Anthony Raschilla (Girard, Ohio) connected on a one out, two-RBI double, clearing the bases and extending the Panther lead to 5-0.

Still in the fifth inning with one out, junior Christian Prince (Hudsonville, Mich.) was hit by a pitch and Delgado got on board with an infield single. Junior Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio) knocked in the fourth run of the inning on another infield single. Prince scored the fifth and final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Senior Alex Borgan (Pickerington, Ohio) came on in the sixth for the Panthers and pitched a solid two innings, allowing one hit and had three strikeouts.  The Panther hit parade was led by Tisdale with three, while Schluessler, Rovnak and Delagdo chipped in with two.

In game two, hits were hard to come by for the Panthers, as they only managed four singles. Tisdale, Jaskot, Horsley and sophomore Kyle Suminiski (Fraser, Mich.) registered the four Panther knocks, while Horsley drove in the only earned run.

The Eagles jumped out early, scoring a run in the bottom of the first on an Alex Sortwell single. The Panthers responded in the top of the third, when a passed ball, allowed Schluessler to score.

In the bottom half of the inning, Ashland hit the go-ahead run on a single to center field by Tyler Gray, scoring Wade Kaido. The Black and Gold knotted the score 2-2 in the fourth when Suminski hit a one-out single to left field. Sophomore Kevin Lydic (Dublin, Ohio) followed with a walk. Jaksot loaded the bases for the Panthers on a single and Horsley knocked him in after belting a single to right field.

Sophomore Cole Carpenter (Zanesville, Ohio) started for ODU and took the loss.

Ashland scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go ahead 8-2, and sealed the Panthers fate.

The Panthers clinched the No. 4 spot in the GLIAC tournament and will face off against No. 3 Ashland in the first round on May 8 at Oestrike Stadium on the campus of Eastern Michigan University.
