Baseball Hits Road for Twinbill at Malone

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's baseball team heads back on the road for the first two of five games away from the friendly confines of Panther Valley as ODU takes on Malone in a GLIAC doubleheader on Wednesday.

The opener is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at Thurman Munson Stadium in Canton.

The Panthers enter the week with a 12-16 record overall, including an 8-6 tally in the GLIAC, while Malone is 10-18 (3-12 GLIAC). ODU currently sits seventh in the conference standings but is just two games out of first place.

After losing the first two games of its weekend series against first place Grand Valley, the Panthers responded with a 9-2 victory in game three on Sunday. ODU pounded out 13 hits – the most that the Lakers have yielded this season - and broke free from a 2-2 tie with a seven-run seventh inning, matching the largest scoring inning for the team this year.  The nine runs were also the most that Grand Valley – the top pitching staff in the GLIAC – has allowed this spring.

Junior Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela) and sophomore Vince Bartolone (Broadview Heights, Ohio) each had three hits, junior Anthony Raschilla (Girard, Ohio) went 2-for-2 with a walk, and senior Ryan Rovnak (Poland, Ohio) and sophomore Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio) each knocked in two runs to lead the Panther attack.

On the mound, senior Nick Venditti (Brecksville, Ohio) worked five innings of four-hit ball on just three days' rest, and he was followed by sophomores Cole Carpenter (Zanesville, Ohio) and Bartolone who combined for four innings of two-hit relief.

As a team, the Panthers rank fourth in the GLIAC with 154 runs scored, and the team's .293 batting average is fourth. Delgado is in the top-10 in the conference in average, doubles, triples, RBI, stolen bases and slugging percentage, while Rovnak is also in the top-10 in at bats, hits, doubles, RBI and total bases.

Freshman Collin Parcher (Napoleon, Ohio) leads the team and is fifth in the GLIAC with 23 RBI and Schluessler is fourth with 24 runs scored.

On the mound, Panther hurlers have a 4.47 ERA, which is sixth in the GLIAC, and ODU also ranks sixth with 155 strikeouts.

Venditti is third in the conference with 42.1 innings and four wins, while sophomore Daniel Mooney (Wauconda, Ill.) ranks second in strikeouts (36) to go along with a team-best 3.37 ERA and .222 batting average against.

Bartolone has yet to allow an earned run in 17.1 innings of relief this season, striking out 16 to just five walks, and junior Sean Blackburn (Wadsworth, Ohio) has a 3.86 ERA in 32.2 innings, spanning nine appearances.

Malone snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 10-9 victory at Tiffin on Sunday, tallying a season-best 19 hits in the process. Michael Chack had five of those hits and is batting .361 with 11 RBI this year, while Bob Suitca leads the team in average (.379), home runs (two) and RBI (21).

Jared Messer has a team-best three wins on the mound with a 3.15 ERA in six starts, and Jesse Koblentz has a 1.65 ERA in relief with 17 strikeouts in 16.1 innings.
