COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican baseball team completed a three game series sweep of future Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Lake Erie College on Saturday with a pair of wins at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio. The Storm rallied in its last at-bat to force extra innings in game one before a ninth-inning home run lifted the Panthers to a 6-4 win. Lake Erie then saw a late lead slip away with a six-run sixth inning for ODU in a 7-3 win in game two.
The two wins gave Ohio Dominican (9-18) a three-game series sweep and extended the Storm's (9-14) losing streak to a season-high six games.
In the opener, John Bowron (So./Dayton, OH) homered to lead off the ninth inning to break a 4-4 tie. The Panthers added another run and Kyle Gore (Jr./Solon, OH) set the Storm down in order in the bottom of the inning for his second save in as many games against Lake Erie.
The Panthers looked to have the game won earlier when they scored three times in the top of the seventh, finally breaking through against Lake Erie ace, Adam Beach, who held ODU to just one run through the first six innings.
But in similar fashion, the Storm responded with three of their own in the bottom of the seventh, getting to ODU's top hurler, Andy Onak (Sr./Orland Park, IL; pictured). The Storms three runs came on four hits in their final at-bat to send the game into extra frames.
After a scoreless eighth, Bowron took Lake Erie's reliever Logan Nordquist over the wall in left field for the lead. Three straight singles by the Panthers pushed across an insurance run to help the Panthers to the 6-4 victory.
Onak (2-3) picked up the win, going eight innings. He allowed four runs, three earned, on 11 hits and struckout three.
Eian Banks (Sr./Delaware, OH) had four hits, while Evan Shaw (So./Delaware, OH) and J.T. Feldkamp (Jr./Lorian, OH) each collected three hits apiece for ODU.
The Panthers struck first in game two, but thanks to a three run first the host Storm looked to salvage a split on day two. Lake Erie carried a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning when ODU touched up reliever Mike Morgan for six runs to regain the lead, 7-3.
After a walk and hit-batsmen led off the inning, Caleb Wilburn (Fr./Delaware, OH) singled in a run to start the rally for the Black and Gold. Back-to-back singles gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead and a two RBI triple by Felix Brown (Jr./ Philipsburg, St. Maarten ) extended the inning. Bowron followed that up with a double to right to give the Panthers a 7-3 lead.
Alex Borgan (Fr./Pickerington, OH) earned his second win of the season, scattering seven hits through six-plus innings of work. Borgan got into trouble just once after the first, but escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.
Brown led the way for the Panthers with three more hits in the nightcap and Wilburn had a pair of knocks in the win.
Ohio Dominican will return to action on Tuesday, April 6th as they host former AMC counterpart Walsh University in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one for the Panthers and Cavaliers is set for 1 p.m.
