Childers, Pavlik Garner Year-End Awards From G-MAC

INDIANAPOLIS – Former Ohio Dominican baseball student-athlete Justin Childers (Pickerington, Ohio) was named the G-MAC Male Athlete of the Year, while former women's soccer student-athlete Alli Pavlik (Cortland, Ohio) was named the G-MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year on Tuesday.

This is the second major conference-wide award for Childers, who was named the G-MAC Male Collegiate Achievement Award winner in May. That honor was based upon an individual's academic excellence, athletic achievements, character, leadership and engagement within the community and conference.

Criteria for the Male Athlete of the Year is solely on athletic performance in one's sport, in which Childers excelled. He was named the G-MAC Player of the Year and D2CCA Midwest Region Player of the Year while also being named to the NCBWA's Midwest Region First Team. The first baseman also picked up a pair of All-American accolades this spring as well.

He finished the season by batting .407 in 50 games with 20 doubles, 13 homers and 48 RBIs, while also legging out five triples and scoring 76 runs. He drew 45 walks to help account for a .540 on-base percentage and slugged .786 this spring as well. Childers was twice named the G-MAC North Division Player of the Week as well.

Childers led the country in runs scored per game (1.52) and was second with his 76 total runs scored. He ranked third in OBP, 10th in slugging, 15th in walks, 20th in doubles and 24th in batting average this spring.

Childers became the 13th ODU baseball player drafted as he was selected in the 33rd round by the Detroit Tigers on June 6. He finished his career with a .375 batting average, .468 OBP, .640 slugging percentage, 259 hits, 213 runs, 52 doubles, 13 triples, 35 homers, 170 RBIs, 111 walks and 34 steals in 195 games played.

The G-MAC Scholar Athlete of the Year Award is bestowed upon the male or female who has compiled the most G-MAC outstanding record in athletics, scholarship and leadership.

Pavlik, a 3.98 student who majored in international business, was a CoSIDA Academic All-American this past year for the Panthers. She also excelled on the pitch for ODU, garnering Second Team All-Great Midwest honors while being selected to the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region team.

Despite missing several games due to injury, Pavlik still recorded 11 goals and three assists in 14 starts, registering 25 points and knocking in six game-winners. She was named the G-MAC Player of the Week on Sept. 19 after scoring game-winners against Ursuline and Lake Erie.

Pavlik finished her four-year career by scoring 30 goals and registering eight assists, starting 57 games and appearing in 74 overall for the Panthers.

She was a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District pick who also picked up a pair of GLIAC Academic Excellence awards and an All-Great Midwest academic nod as well in her career. Off the field, she volunteered with the Animal Welfare League, the Ronald McDonald House and the YWCA Family Center. She was a member of ODU's Presidents Society, worked as a resident assistant, and was also a business tutor at ODU.
