LEXINGTON, Ky. – Ohio Dominican's volleyball team was recently honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association for its excellence in the classroom in 2010-11, closing the academic year with a GPA higher than a 3.30 to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award.
ODU was one of just two GLIAC schools to garner the honor, joining the University of Findlay. The Panthers were also one of just 57 Division II schools in the nation to finish with a GPA higher than 3.30.
"I'm extremely proud of our girls and the work they put in both on and off the court," head coach Sandy Rowley said. "They have a tremendous work ethic and dedication to succeed, and it shows. This award speaks volumes to the effort they put in."
The volleyball team had nine student-athletes recognized by the GLIAC for their academic accomplishments last year, including seniors Rachel Billing (Anna, Ohio) and Stacy Rogg (Cincinnati, Ohio) and juniors Kristy Birkemeier (Columbus Grove, Ohio) and Shannon Nadler (Leipsic, Ohio).
The Panthers have a trio of scrimmages coming up, as they head to Cedarville on Saturday, Aug. 20; Shawnee State on Wednesday, Aug. 24; and Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday, Aug. 27. ODU begins its regular season on Friday, Sept. 2 at the Glenville State Tournament in Glenville, W.Va. The Panthers take on the host Pioneers as well as West Virginia State on that Friday.
