AUDIO: Lauren Bates Postgame Interview

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Senior Lauren Bates (Hilliard, Ohio) scored 16 of her career high 27 points in the second half, but none were bigger than her 18 foot jump shot with 10.7 seconds left to give Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team a 66-65 win at Southern Indiana Friday night.

The Panthers (8-5), who had trailed by as many as 14 points in the second quarter and never led by more than two points at any part of the contest, outscored USI 19-10 in the third quarter to draw even at 46 heading into the fourth.

That fourth period featured seven ties and 11 lead changes as neither side led by more than two points. Down 58-56, junior Darian Rose (Fort Loramie, Ohio) buried a three to give ODU a one-point lead with 3:43 left, but USI (10-2) answered with a layup with 3:07 to play.

Bates took over from that point, though, scoring ODU's final seven points in the last 2:15 of the game. She started with a three-point play, then made a layup with 44 seconds left to give ODU a 64-63 lead.

USI hit two free throws with 29 ticks left, but Bates answered with her jump shot, and the Screaming Eagles missed a shot with six seconds left as junior Sarah Futscher (Wilder, Ky.) snared the rebound to end the contest.

Bates made 11-of-16 shots from the field and also had four rebounds as the Panthers finished plus-four on the glass in a matchup that featured the GLIAC and GLVC's top-rebounding teams.

Rose was the only other Panther to finish in double figures as she scored 11 points. Senior Madi Rittinger (Dayton, Ohio) had eight points and six rebounds and Futscher also grabbed six boards to help lead ODU.

The Panthers shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) and scored 23 second chance points off of 17 offensive rebounds. ODU also converted 15 USI turnovers into 21 points.

USI started the game on a 16-5 run and led 20-12 at the end of the first quarter before building a 34-20 lead, its largest, with 3:36 left in the half. Bates hit a jump shot to trim it to 36-27 at the break.

Still down by 10 with 6:22 left in the third, ODU closed the period with a 12-2 run. Futscher hit three free throws and freshman Jessica Boerger (Fort Loramie, Ohio) added two more to cut it to 46-45, and senior Tori Beth Leader (West Portsmouth, Ohio) added a free throw with 30 seconds left to tie it at 46.

Ohio Dominican returns to conference play with a 5:30 p.m. tip against Lake Superior State on Thursday in Alumni Hall.
