Offense Regains Rhythm Late As Men's Basketball Bests Senators 79-67

ELKINS, W. Va. – Two big baskets by senior Adam Cytlak (Van Buren, Ohio) and sophomore Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) helped Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team hold off Davis & Elkins on Thursday as the Panthers scored a 79-67 road G-MAC win.

ODU (8-8, 3-6 G-MAC) had led by as much as 19 points, 61-42, with 14:26 left, but the Senators whittled it to 64-60 with six minutes to play. Cytlak buried a triple on ODU's next possession and Hoyng followed with a jumper of his own to push the Panther lead back to nine, 69-60.

The Senators countered with a triple, but sophomore Hasan Varence (Queens, N.Y.) made a layup on the next possession, then drew fouls on ODU's next two trips down the floor and made 3-of-4 free throws to extend the lead to 74-63 with 2:33 left. A layup by senior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) on the Panthers' next possession and another layup from Varence made it 78-65 with 1:27 left, icing the victory.

Four players scored in double figures for the Panthers, as Varence recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) came off the bench to add 19 points as well, draining five triples, and Williams scored 16 points as he buried four treys. Junior Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds and a career-high six assists.

ODU took control early, jumping to a 25-7 lead less than eight minutes into the game. Williams was red hot early on, scoring 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field in that stretch, hitting a trio of threes. ODU led by double figures until the 2:17 mark of the half, when D&E drew within 38-29, but Williams answered with another three, and Hickey and Casanova each knocked down treys in the final 45 seconds to send the Panthers to the locker room with a 47-33 lead.

The Panthers went 10-of-19 from behind the arc in the opening half, with Williams and Hickey each sinking four.

ODU stayed sharp offensively to start the second half, scoring 14 points in the first five and a half minutes, capped by a Hickey triple to give the Panthers the 61-42 lead. D&E answered with an 18-3 run over the next eight minutes, though, to draw within four.

Cytlak matched a career-high with his eight assists as the Panthers assisted on 21 of their 28 field goals in the game. Varence also blocked three shots.

Ohio Dominican remains on the road to take on Alderson Broaddus at 4 p.m. Saturday.
