CANTON, Ohio — Malone held Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team to 42.6 percent shooting from the field and a season-low 18.2 percent from three-point range to earn a 66-59 victory over the Panthers in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference game at Osborne Hall in Canton on Saturday afternoon.
Malone (9-4, 2-3 G-MAC) held a 41-29 rebounding advantage over Ohio Dominican (7-6, 2-4 G-MAC) and also limited the Panthers to a season-low nine bench points. ODU held the Pioneers to just 3-of-16 shooting from three-point range and forced Malone into 14 turnovers.
Sophomore Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) led the way for Ohio Dominican with a game-high 19 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior point guard Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) scored in double figures for the fourth-straight game, notching 12 points on six made field goals.
After a made three-pointer by Varence on an assist from senior Adam Cytlak (Van Buren, Ohio) that tied the contest at 47 apiece, Malone went on a 9-0 run to take a 56-47 lead over the Panthers with 8:43 to go. ODU responded with five-straight points to cut its deficit to 56-52. A made layup by senior Mike DeLeon (Powell, Ohio) and then a made layup and free throw for Varence cut Malone's lead to just four with 5:20 to go in the second half. But MU scored the next four points to take a 60-52 lead with 3:00 remaining and held ODU to just three field goals in the final five minutes of play.
ODU will look to get back on track when it faces Findlay on Tuesday, January 2 at 6 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.
