HILLSDALE, Mich. — Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team held Hillsdale to 41.5 percent shooting from the field, but the Chargers knocked down 11 three-pointers and scored 46 points in the second half to earn a 72-67 win over ODU in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference game at Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers (6-5, 2-3 G-MAC) led by as many as 18 points in the contest, but Hillsdale (11-2, 5-1 G-MAC) battled back to remain a perfect 7-0 at home this season.
ODU notched 15 second chance points on eight offensive rebounds and also held a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint over the Chargers. The Panthers committed just seven turnovers in the contest, but Hillsdale also took care of the ball, committing just nine turnovers while also shooting efficient marks of 11-of-26 from three-point range and 17-of-20 from the free throw line.
Sophomore forward Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) led the Panthers with 15 points and nine rebounds, shooting 7-of-9 from the field. Senior guards Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) and Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) each notched 13 points, while junior Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) scored 10 points off the bench.
The Panthers led 37-26 at halftime and led by as many as 18 points in the second half. Two made jump shots by Varence and a three-pointer by Williams to begin the second half gave Ohio Dominican a 44-26 lead at the 17:32 mark of the final stanza. But the Chargers made 13-of-24 field goal attempts in the second half and went 14-of-14 from the free throw line over the final 20 minutes of play.
The Panthers will take on West Virginia State in a non-conference contest on Monday, December 18 in Alumni Hall.
